Shake the Snow Off Your Walking Shoes and Get Moving!

We all know that exercise is good for us. We have all heard our doctors and IP coach tell us that we should begin incorporating some exercise into our lives to improve our cholesterol, mobility, weight loss or maintenance, and overall longevity. BUT we also know the reality of a Yakima winter. We know that from the months of December (if we are lucky) to March (at least) our exercises are basically contained to what can be done inside to avoid the snow, ice, and freezing temperatures. We try to get creative by walking up and down the aisles in the grocery store, but what does that typically lead to? Impulsive buying. Which almost always negates the point of exercising.

But as we look outside we see that those long, cold days are behind us. We can see the sun peeking out from behind the clouds and can feel the temperature warming up. But sometimes getting back into the habit of regular exercise following months of hibernation is not as easy as it sounds. So what do we do?

GET MOVING!! The answer sounds simple and a bit daunting at the same time, but it doesn't have to be that way. Now that it is sunny and warming up, it is the perfect opportunity to find a new exercise routine that you enjoy. Exercise does not have to be complicated, or intense, or brutal. For those who are just beginning to exercise, start with walking. Bring your walking shoes to work, find some co-workers or friends, and go on walks during your lunch break. Make sure you eat before you go, and avoid walking through areas that are heavy with fast food restaurants or other temptations. You will love the break that you take from sitting at a desk and the sun shining down on you directly, instead of through the windows.

For those who are more experienced with exercise and want a bit more of a challenge, try something new. Pull your bike out of your garage and find a trail where you and your family can ride together. Find a new spot to go hiking and spend the weekends out exploring. Look at what is in the area around us and find a new hobby, that doesn't involve sitting inside watching TV on beautiful days. There are so many different activities that you can explore, and this is the perfect time to try it out! If you find something you really love, invite a friend! Tell someone else about it and get a group together.

Spring is the time to get out of hibernation, shake the snow off your shoes, and get moving!
